A Comparison of the Residual Amount of Bacteria According to Cleansing Methods of Removable Orthodontic Appliances

Abstract
|
|
|
Objective: Removable orthodontic appliances are cleaned in several ways. Measuring the amount of bacteria remaining on the device allows comparison of effective techniques to provide to the educational materials.
Methods: Thirty orthodontics patients completed a questionnaire, and three weeks three times a week the other three methods to measure the amount of bacteria by ATP. They were shown cleaning methods using a cleansing agent, an ultrasonic cleaner, and a spin dryer cleaner.
Results: RLU was reduced after cleansing, in each group (p£¼0.01). There was no statistically significant different of RLU among groups before cleansing (p=0.861) but there were significant differences after cleansing (p=0.011) and differences in the pre and post RLU count of each group (p=0.001).
Conclusion: It is recommended to use a spin dryer cleaner or ultrasonic cleaner unit with a cleansing agent for removable orthodontic appliances, to achieve better hygiene.
